Meet Dona, a Volunteer with Southern Cross Care sharing their story as part of our ‘Share Your Story’ Series.
Introduction and Background
“As I live in Australia under a guardian visa, I have restrictions on working for wages. So I needed to give my service to Australia as a volunteer and to spend my time in a useful way. Also, I am a registered Ayurvedic Doctor in my country (Sri Lanka) with sound knowledge about prevention methods, different health conditions, diet, and behavioral requirements.”
Path to Volunteering
“In Australia, I completed a Certificate 3 course in Aged Care from Celtic, Adelaide. I feel I am on the right path and so happy for that.”
Volunteer Role
“In Southern Cross Care Buckland, I serve as a lifestyle supporter. I focus on residents isolated in their rooms, providing company, emotional support, and encouragement. I also assist the staff during activities, helping with serving food and beverages, cleaning, and transporting residents to and from activity rooms.”
Message to Aspiring Volunteers
“Volunteering shows your kind heart and capability. It gives you huge strength, pride, and adds value to your life. It is not only about giving but also gaining vast knowledge and experience. Australia needs you!”
