Meet Adele, a volunteer at Scouts NSW, sharing their journey as part of our ‘Share Your Story’ series.
Inspired by Past Leaders
“I first became a Leader because I was inspired by the support I received from my Venturer Leaders when I was completing my Queen’s Scout Award as a youth member. They taught me so much about leadership, challenging myself to push my limits and become someone who can make a difference in the lives of others. I wanted to give back to the organisation that had taught me so much and helped me mature into the person I am today.”
Continued Inspiration and Creativity
“Now having been a Leader since 2005, I continue to be inspired to volunteer with the positive engagements I have with all members of Scouting. Volunteering with Scouts has seen me explore my passion for the creative and performing arts through my involvement in Cumberland Gang Show (a variety show written and performed by Scouts and Girl Guides) and as State Commissioner – Arts and Literature for Scouts NSW. I have had opportunities to perform at a vast array of events in different states throughout Australia due to my involvement.”
Unique Experiences with Scouts
“Scouts ensures a well-rounded program in an array of areas that would interest all youth and adult volunteers. The exposure to things you wouldn’t necessarily have exposure to is what makes Scouts so unique. One week you could be abseiling off a cliff, and the next you could be conducting a science experiment and going camping on the weekend. The possibilities are endless! The variety is what makes volunteering for Scouts NSW so fun!”
Building Confidence in Youth
“I am especially inspired by the confidence I see being built in our youth members as they stand where I once stood and see them achieve more than they ever dreamed possible. Helping others is such a wonderful reward. Volunteering definitely lives up to the quote ‘it is far better to give than to receive.'”
Deepening Relationships
“I’ve also enjoyed deepening my relationship with my daughter through volunteering my time to attend various Scouting events with her.”
Encouragement to Future Volunteers
“Stop thinking, just do it! Volunteering is so good for your mental health and wellbeing. It helps keep people connected socially with like-minded people. Volunteering finds you forming a second family. The reward is beyond anything you could have imagined. Volunteering sees you actively doing things that get you outdoors, and don’t we all need more time off screens! Volunteering is a wonderful way to give back to our community and be active and responsible citizens. I implore you, consider what you’re passionate about and pursue opportunities with that to volunteer your time. I promise you won’t regret it!”
