Meet Jeremy, a volunteer at Castlemaine Safe Space sharing their story as part of our ‘Share Your Story’ series.
Finding Purpose and Community
“I have a strong sense of purpose and meaning, and a strong sense of community – I am very grateful and appreciative for what I’ve been given from the local Castlemaine and wider Mount Alexander Shire community in the 30 years I’ve been here – and I want to give back to those who are potentially struggling. And it’s just a good thing to do!”
Creating a Welcoming Environment
“I enjoy the atmosphere and environment at the Castlemaine Safe Space – I like the fact that it’s non-clinical, that people can just turn up, and there’s no referral needed. If they are having a rough day – morning, month, evening – they can drop in and literally know there’s a safe space for them. They can have a cuppa, have a chat or not – it’s pretty relaxed and I like that.”
Encouraging Volunteering
“I think they should be brave and courageous. I think it’s important when we have issues around mental health, homelessness, finance, and relationship struggles, it can be difficult and confronting sometimes to do it – but it can also be really rewarding. There’s training available, there’s other volunteers around, and there’s lots of support. I think people should just do it!”
