Meet Lesley, a volunteer at the Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington, sharing their journey as part of our ‘Share Your Story’ series.
Instilled with the Spirit of Volunteering
“My parents were community volunteers in a number of fields – CWA, school council and PTA, sports, and Meals on Wheels. I think the attitude was instilled at an early age that giving back is a two-way street – you receive more than you give.”
Passion for Education and Helping Others
“As a former teacher, I know the power and value of volunteers in every aspect of children’s lives and those of their families. To me, Rotary is a simple segue for teaching and allows me to continue to do what I can to help others.”
Rotary’s Global Impact
“Rotary has seven specific areas of focus, all aligned to the UN SDGs and focusing on making the lives of people across the world better. Whether it is through the famous End Polio program, basic education and literacy, water and sanitation, environment, maternal and child health, economic development, or peace programs, volunteers are able to explore their passions and assist in a way which resonates for them.”
Making a Difference through Rotary
“Through the Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington, I have been able to focus on my belief in education and enrich the lives of thousands of children. Volunteering to me is about giving back – I have been very fortunate in my life and I owe many others for the support I received, so I need to do the same.”
Encouragement to Future Volunteers
“Find something you believe strongly about and volunteer in that area. Give what you can, when you can, and make a difference. No effort is too little and there are so many people who will be grateful for whatever you do. Volunteering is like giving yourself a shot of sunshine.”
