Meet Ruth, a volunteer with Dhelkaya Health, sharing her journey as part of our ‘Share Your Story’ series.
Introduction to Volunteering
“I was introduced to volunteering through my family, who always gave back, so volunteering for me was a normal thing to do. When living in the city, volunteering did not seem so accessible; however, when I moved to Castlemaine, I became involved in many volunteering positions.”
Discovering Nordic Pole Walking
“Prior to moving to Castlemaine, I was diagnosed with a medical condition, and the Doctor said, ‘You have to keep moving.’ When talking to a friend, she mentioned Nordic Pole walking and asked me to come along, so I started walking regularly with a group. The walking really helped me. We moved to Castlemaine, and one day while having lunch in the park, I saw a group of Nordic Pole walkers pass by. I was so excited I raced after them to find out how to join. I am now a Nordic Pole walking leader and take regular walking groups.”
The Benefits of Volunteering
“My catch cry is ‘Just do it.’ The walking is good and keeps you moving, which is what you need to do for your body. You meet new people and make friends. You see people grow within themselves, and that makes you feel good too. The good thing is that there are training and support structures in place, and you have people available to guide and help you. Don’t be afraid to ask.”
